Movement of Food Grains

Movement Branch of this Department deals with movement of surplus food grains to the deficient regions of the country and co-ordinates with FCI and Railways. It also resolves complaints regarding inadequate supply of food grains in areas of deficiency. The Branch also deals with disaster management and emergency support functions of the Department. About 40 million tonnes of food grains are transported by FCI across the country in a year. Movement of food grains is undertaken by rails road and Waterways. More than 85% of the movement of stocks is undertaken by rail. Inter-State movement by road is mainly undertaken in those parts of the country which are not connected by rail. Foodgrains stocks are also moved by ocean vessels to Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and through coastal shipping and riverine movement to Kerala/Agartala (Tripura).
