Central Grains Analysis Laboratory (CGAL) was set up under the Department of Agriculture in 1945 and housed in Jam Nagar House, New Delhi. In its initial phase, CGAL catered to the need of analyzing samples of food grains, mainly wheat and wheat flour, when Government used to allocate wheat from the Central Pool. Subsequently, on separation of the Department of Food from the Ministry of Agriculture, the CGAL continued functioning under the Department of Food. When the offices of the Ministry of Agriculture were shifted to Krishi Bhawan in 1956, the CGAL was also relocated from Jam Nagar House to Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi. Presently, CGAL is working under Government of India, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Department of Food and Public Distribution, 5th Floor, Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi- 110001. CGAL is NABL Accreditation Laboratory as per ISO/IEC 17025:2005 since 2018 and upgraded to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 in the year 2020. The lab has also been designated as referral lab in case of disputes in acceptance of Custom Milled Rice consignments between FCI and State agencies/rice millers. CGAL has also been designated as Regional Reference laboratory for SAARC Food bank. The laboratory undertake assessment of the quality of food grains that are procured, stored and distributed by Food Corporation of India, CWC, SWC and other state agencies as per BIS Methods. Laboratory is also committed to ensure the quality and safety of the central pool stock of Rice, wheat and other coarse cereals as per Uniform Specification decided by Ministry.
